Why extraordinary Iceland is best explored by ship!

From geysers and waterfalls to glaciers and lava tunnels, Iceland is the ‘Land of Fire and Ice’ and boasts an abundance of wondrous natural attractions to explore. Not just on land either - the sea waters around Iceland are some of the best in the world for attracting humpback, blue, fin, sperm and minke whales, plus orcas and white-beaked dolphins. Isabella from our Ringwood shop took a four-night cruise from Liverpool to Reykjavik with Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines for a taste of Icelandic excitement…

“I really recommend customers to see Iceland by ship as the wildlife at sea is spectacular. I woke up to whales and dolphins swimming beside the ship and could watch them with the binoculars provided from my balcony whilst enjoying my room service breakfast – bliss! Fred. Olsen work with marine wildlife charity ORCA, who send volunteers on select sailings to collect data on the species and numbers of marine life sighted, observing their behaviours and providing guests with a unique insight into marine conservation. I was able to join a WhatsApp group on the cruise where we were alerted about sightings of whales, dolphins and birds and could rush out on deck to spot them.

A series of free lectures relevant to the destination are always offered onboard, and I really enjoyed hearing from the experts. As we were sailing to Iceland, there were great talks on the wildlife and the volcanic landscape of the country. I learnt so much - for instance in Iceland the energy they use for hot water and central heating comes from the Earth’s natural sources. It is not extractive and is completely sustainable. As a result, everyone in the country gets these services for free! What a difference to the household bills that must make!

From Liverpool we sailed to Reykjavik and there I joined an excursion to the Blue Lagoon which was a real bucket list experience. It was very relaxing and fascinating to learn about how it works. The coach journey there was part of the fun - our guide was hilarious, and the journey was very smooth. I can also really recommend trying the Icelandic Hot Dog!

Exploring Iceland

I was onboard Bolette, Fred. Olsen’s flagship, named after his great grandmother. My first impressions were great – the ship did not feel too busy or crowded, even though it was embarkation day. The ship accommodates just over 1300 passengers over ten decks and the public spaces were clean and spacious with seating and loungers available. Bolette has a wonderful auditorium showcasing fantastic singers and performers, as well as the lectures. The gym has great equipment and the spa is gorgeous. I recommend booking the spa as soon as you’re on board – it is popular for a reason! I loved relaxing in the Botanical Lounge – this is a space dedicated to plants and nature and the décor is relaxing with a wide variety of books to choose from. You can flip through a book whilst sitting by the large windows, watching the sea. The smaller size of the ship makes it warm and easy to get around, without losing the spark. There was always a lot to do or be involved with, should you want this, without it being too in your face.

Lots of places to relax onboard, from the pool to the Botanical Room or on deck
Ice carving entertainment!

My cabin was a Balcony Premium Grade. It was gorgeous – clean and spacious. The bed was very comfortable, and it was wonderful to have a balcony to look out over the midnight sun. The facilities are clean and work well and I had a gorgeous bottle of bubbles and a flower arrangement on the table when I arrived – this was a lovely, personal touch. Each night I enjoyed a selection of canapes delivered to my room.

I was able to see the other cabin grades and was impressed by how spacious they were. Even the inside cabins felt light and roomy. I personally love the veranda cabins that take you straight out onto the deck – what a perfect position in the ship.

The staff were fantastic – attentive, professional, warm and hilarious! What a great crew. I enjoyed a cocktail making experience which was not only delicious… but very entertaining. The cocktail makers played music, had lights, music and great moves!

Tantalise your tastebuds with a wine tasting!

The food was fantastic – I have a food allergy and had a meeting with a staff member regarding this as part of my check in – I was able to see that day’s menu before I was even on the ship! I was very impressed. All the restaurants were fabulous, but my favourites were the specialty restaurants – Vasco and Colours and Tastes – it’s hard to choose between them as they offer very different food. I really recommend trying the exceptional flavours of these restaurants, for a small additional cost. In fact, if I could taste anything from my trip again, it would be the wonton soup from ‘Colours and Tastes’ – it was delicious. The afternoon tea has a lovely selection of sandwiches, cakes, teas (and bubbles!) and would be great for celebrating a special occasion whilst on board.

This trip is generally suited to adults of all ages - I truly think there is something for everyone onboard. I had a wonderful time on the Bolette and am in awe of the wildlife, landscape and architecture of Iceland. This is a destination that offers a different experience to your usual cruise itinerary, whilst also enjoying the great quality of a Fred. Olsen cruise.”
