Lapland is for life, not just for Christmas! Beyond the festive allure of visiting Santa, this extraordinary destination should be on everyone’s bucket list, young or old, to experience the pristine snowscapes and exciting winter activities available. Claire, Assistant Manager at Colchester, and Kerry, Branch Manager at Travel Norwich Airport, were lucky enough to escort a Transun Northern Lights Tour to Finnish Lapland.  With Transun’s 40+ years’ experience in amazing Arctic itineraries, they knew they were in for something really special.

Departing from regional airports is a fantastic reason to travel with Transun – flying from Norwich Airport for their trip, Claire was really impressed with just how easy this was, “It was my first time flying from Norwich Airport - what a delightful little airport! There’s no hustle and bustle and no queues. I stayed at the Premier Inn the night before and walked to the terminal in the morning which took about 5 minutes. There’s a coffee shop/bar and ample seating for everyone, it was a great way to start the trip, and I wouldn’t hesitate to fly from there again.”

Claire and Kerry were based at The Davvi Arctic Lodge for their stay. The hotel has a restaurant, bar area and lounge, with an open fire, and a sauna. “This hotel would suit families, solo guests and clients of most ages providing they are able bodied - because of the snow and ice, and some of the rooms being located on the lower floor, it wouldn’t be suitable for guests with mobility issues.” advises Claire, “The rooms are rustic but cozy & comfortable. Even though we had a view of the car park this was a lovely snowy scene every morning, so as car park views go, it was very pretty!” The hotel is situated on a hillside, with a petrol station, gift shop/supermarket & coffee shop about 10 minutes’ walk away. Apart from that, there’s nothing but snowy wonderland all around, so if you are seeking a break away from tourist crowds and the bustle of life, then this truly is it.

The Northern Lights trip includes five amazing activities, with minibus transfers if required, and some trips operating right from the hotel doors:

Snowmobile Northern Lights Safari, Snowshoeing, Forest Trek, Reindeer Camp, Husky Dog Sledding:

Chasing the Northern Lights by snowmobile
Trekking through stunning wintry wonderlands
Visiting a Reindeer Camp and enjoying a sleigh ride
Husky dog sledding around the local area

The trip is full board, with meals served at the hotel. “There are a few local drinks to be tried,” says Claire, “Gloggi is a hot berry juice which you will have included with some activities, and if you try it in the hotel, it’s lovely with a shot of spiced rum in it! I did also try Reindeer Stew which was very tasty.”

We can share some packing tips - take hand and feet warmers and thermal layers – it was -27 degrees when Claire and Kerry visited! A snow suit and boots for the duration of your holiday are included in the cost of your trip. Due to short winter days, a head torch is also recommended.

Claire summarises, “This trip is incredible! The scenery is amazing and the activities are so well organised. I would love to go again and I can’t recommend it highly enough.”
